The project directive was to craft an eye-catching poster and vinyl in order to promote Daphne Oram's homage concert at the Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal.
Daphne Oram was a pioneering figure in electronic music, known for developing the Oramics technique, a method of creating electronic sounds through graphical notation. Her innovative contributions laid the foundation for the evolution of electronic music and its integration into various artistic realms.
The first time I listened to Electronic Sound Patterns, it was a kind of music I had never ventured into before. Using this fresh new sound, I decided to listen to the music while producing several mark makings according to what I was hearing through my headphones. Using ink and markers, the thick black stroke is there to represent the consistency that Oram retains in her songs, while the three colorful strokes are present to show that sometimes, she tends to go off the grid. The decorative display type transcribes the electronic aspect of Oram’s music.
